Today, Anchor Handling Tug Supply (i.e. AHTS) vessels are most widely used in global offshore operations that they have undertaken an indispensable role in the said industry. With the development in the offshore services demanding functionality & versatility of AHTS vessels, more of which are designed to embody Dynamic Positioning function of DP1 or DP2 to follow the tide.

Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels combine the role of supply vessels and anchor handling tugs. They are the backbone of offshore operations. Not only do they deliver all sorts of ocean oil supplies such as deck cargo, containers, fresh water, fuel, dry bulk, oil pipes, drilling water and mud etc. to oil rigs and platforms, but also provide anchor handling services, towage duties and in some cases also serve as an Emergency Towing Rescue and Recovery Vessel (ETRRV). Some more modern AHTS vessels are also equipped for fire fighting, standby, rescue operations and oil recovery to enable them to have a more multi-role capability.    Platform Supply Vessels (i.e.: PSV) are designed specifically to transport cargo, equipment and materials to offshore oil rigs and platforms and when converted can perform a variety of tasks to support offshore operations. PSVs are similar to AHTS vessels, except that PSVs do not have winches, have a closed stern (without stern roller) and generally have large cargo decks.  Some PSVs have been purpose built or converted to undertake a particular services such as seismic survey, undersea flexible pipe laying or offshore repair operations and may provide with helidecks to enable passenger transport to and from the vessel, especially operating in remote sea areas.
