HISTORY

Historically, the Bismarck was one of the largest and most powerful warships ever made. With a displacement of well over 41,000 tons (50,000 tons fully loaded) She was a great deal larger than either British or American ships.

The Bismarck was powered by steam turbine engines and produced 150,000 HP at 30 knots. She had a short 9 month history until her sinking by the British Navy in what was one of the most DRAMATIC episodes of WWII. During a ship to ship duel in the North Sea with The British BattleCruiser HMS Hood and The HMS Prince of Wales, The HMS Hood was sunk. During the battle, the Bismarck attempted to escape the british effort to sink her. After an extensive search, the ship was signted by the RAF and sunk by the British Battleships HMS King George V and the HMS Rodney although recent information states that the crew may have scuttled the ship rather than her actually being sunk by the British. Rescue of the Bismarcks Crew began immediately after her sinking, but was broken off due to fear of attack by German U-Boats.

OUT OF A CREW OF NEARLY 2,300, ONLY 110 SURVIVED.
